ROCKY Opens on Broadway at Winter Garden Theatre, March 2014

Stage Entertainment USA and Sylvester Stallone have announced that the new musical, Rocky, will come to Broadway in 2014, beginning preview performances in February and officially opening in March at Broadway's historic Winter Garden Theatre (1634 Broadway, New York, NY). Rockyreceived its world premiere in fall 2012 in Hamburg, Germany, where it earned unanimous critical raves and continues to play to packed houses. (more...)

It's Official! ROCKY The Musical is Headed to Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre

The paper reports that 'the Broadway version is expected to cost about $15 million, according to Bill Taylor of Stage Entertainment USA, which is producing 'Rocky' on Broadway with Mr. Stallone.' and that 'The Broadway production is expected to be fairly similar to the one in Hamburg, Mr. Taylor said, including the finale - Rocky's climatic fight against Apollo in a regulation-size boxing ring - and the use of music from the movies, like Bill Conti's theme music and 'Eye of the Tiger.' Rialto Chatter: Is ROCKY Musical Headed to The Winter Garden?

Immediately, speculation began at what might replace MAMMA MIA! in the theatre, which was previously home to CATS. Today, Michael Riedel reports that Broadway might see a Spring transfer of the Rocky musical, now running in Germany. He writes that '"Rocky das Musical" cost $20 million to stage in Germany. Sources say the price tag could hit nearly $30 million in New York. With so much money to recoup, the show would inevitably have to land at one of Broadway's largest theaters.' (more...)

Alex Timbers, Stephen Hoggett, Kelly Devine Join Team ROCKY; Musical Takes Germany By Storm in Nov. 2012

As BroadwayWorld reported this yesterday, Sylvester Stallone was out signing autographs when he arrived for a press conference to announce the new musical Rocky in Hamburg, Germany. Today, we report that the production will open at the Operettenhaus in Hamburg Germany in November, 2012. As previously speculated, the production is aiming for Broadway in 2013. Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) and Stephen Hoggett (American Idiot) will direct and choreograph, respectively. The musical features a book by Tony Award-winner Thomas Meehan and songs by Tony Award-winning team Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (composer) - the creators of Ragtime, The Glorious Ones, and Once on This Island. Not one to frequest the Broadway red carpets, Stallone revealed on The View this morning that part of the reason for his attendance was because he's thinking about bringing one of his movies to the stage. Though no announcement has been made regarding a new stage adaptation, back in 2007, Stallone was busy developing Rocky: THE MUSICAL. Could Rocky Balboa on the Great Way Way be a reality once again?
