Schools nominated for Outstanding Overall Production and Leading Actor/Actress nominees performed at the event and award recipients were presented with a crystal award from Tiffany & Co. Summit High School came out on top, winning Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical. A total of 31 awards were presented along with five scholarships and other cash prizes. BWW Reviews: Country Playhouse's SEUSSICAL is Jovially Enticing and Blissfully Gratifyingby David Clarke - Jun 17, 2013It is summer in Houston. The heat index is soaring more and more each day. Moreover, many of our local theatre companies are producing family friendly fare that allows each and every one of us to beat the heat for fun theatrical treats. Championing this campaign is Country Playhouse with their whimsical and captivating production of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' SUESSICAL. The Broadway incarnation tried out in Boston before moving into the Richard Rogers Theatre late in 2000. It was met with lukewarm reviews and closed on May 20, 2001 after 198 performances and 34 previews. Before hitting the road on its first of two national tours, the book underwent extensive revisions because of its marginal showing on Broadway. (more...)
Virginia Rep to Celebrate 60th Anniversary with STEEL MAGNOLIAS, 7/12-8/25by BWW News Desk - Jun 17, 2013Virginia Repertory Theatre celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern with a production of Steel Magnolias featuring an all-star cast. The show opens on Friday, July 12, 2013 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, and runs through August 25, coinciding with the official anniversary on August 1. Sixty years ago in 1953, six actors, two children, a dog and two pigs moved into a historic ruin called Hanover Tavern. The transplanted New Yorkers founded Central Virginia's first professional theatre and named the company in memory of a deceased college friend, Barbara Barksdale. (more...)
