Greetings - I'm trying to find as much information on a show called Phil the Fluter with words and music by David Heneker. Heard a song from it called "They Don't Make Them Like That Anymore" sung by Evelyn Layne and it is more than a fond memory. If anyone knows the show, are all the songs such high quality?
As far as I know "Phil the Fluter" is an Irish show called "The Golden Years" that was renamed for London. Its based on the songs and life of the Irish composer Percy French (best known for "The Mountains of Mourne"). I'm not sure if the Irish version had songs by David Heneker or if it was extensively rewritten for London. I saw an amateur production as a child in the 1970s and think it was very funny. The Percy French songs would all have been standards in Ireland independently of the show.
Never saw this but I worked with Mark Wynter the summer before it opened in London and he was very enthusiastic about it. It flopped though as far as I can see. Here's a link with a list of principal songs and a copy of the poster.
