It's still not the 20th anniversary of RENT. Of one of the early readings, sure, but it's neither the 20th anniversary of the first edition (1989), Off/Broadway (1996), or West End (199 editions. 15th of the West End would be more accurate.
It is, I guess, the 20th anniversary of the last Larson-penned revision to tick, tick...BOOM, but why put on RENT for that? And it's only the 12th anniversary of when most people began being able to see it as a show.
The official marketing blurb says it's the 20th anniversary of the first staged production of the show, which was (according to Wiki) in March 1993 at NYTW. So with this concert taking place in 2013 I GUESS that it's technically accurate?
Technically it's accurate with the first NYTW workshop production. But as pointed out yes it's a bit misleading in terms of when the full off-Broadway/Broadway version took place. Also of course quite out of sync with the Original London production which was 1998.
Still Kerry Ellis and runner up Jesus in concert, singing Rent. I can think of worse nights in the theatre I've had. (Rent: Remixed being one of them...;p)
Spending the morning at the Library of Congress listening to Larson's original demo from 1992 where everything was synth/guitar/drum machine and he sang all the parts except on a couple tracks really hammered home just how misguided those choices were.
That said, holy crap the Garden of Eden satire he worked on was BRILLIANT.
