Londons iconic theatre is having a tough time. Scrooge is doing awful business with rumours of a 200,000 advance at best, that's not even a solid one night. Advance sales for A Chorus Line aren't looking great either with murmurs already flying that the show will struggle to see it 6 month run. Casting is underway but it's hard to name cast this show to try and bring it a broader audience...
Then comes Autumn 2013.... No show in the wings.
Miss Saigon is expected to head to The Edward, Barnum is post poned and ALW has nothing in the pipeline... Or does he? Apparently he is keen for Jesus Christ Superstar to head in or Cats from tour... None of which I can see really working at the Palladium.
Poor programming of the theatre has troubled it so for too long and it's such a shame. It's simple, family large scale entertainment musicals work best.
The show right now should have a large scale Panto or Wiz of Oz should have ran thru the Xmas period, at least that show appeals to tourists and family more so than Tommy Steele in Scrooge, does anyone really know who he is and if they do have they not seen him in this role at some point in the UK over the past 8 years it's dusted off?
A Chrous Line there could be hope... But it's not looking great and I can't see it yet doing stellar business to warrant a full sold out run or extension they were hoping for to see The Plladium through 2013.
We need a big musical and we need it now. Calling producers on Broadway for Annie and Cinderella for if they are hits?
It was a bit eerie in the palladium last night even though the stalls were about 2/3 full. Still felt like a ghost town, no queues for the loo or the bar, loads of free seats in the bar. Only 1 guy dishing out tickets in the box office, and absolutely more people collecting comps than tickets that had been paid for.
Still the show wasnt a total disaster, some good performances and enough to keep the kids entertained.
I'm excited for A chorus line but am unlikely to book in advance, I hope it does well but it probably does need a very popular name for Zach.
Superstar got a far bigger reaction than I expected in Liverpool, but if it was transferring in after A chorus line would be too late.
Annie could work, its been 16 years since the last revival so they could transfer the Broadway production if its still doing well in a year's time.
Charlie switching from The Palladium to Drury Lane has put the Palladium in this situation and unusually this has happened to other theatres which were left with gaps that were luckily filled.
Seems a tad early to be starting Scrooge. No doubt as Christmas gets nearer, bookings will improve. As for A Chorus Line, am not surprised its advance ticket sales are not great. It's not a show that has an obvious draw for audiences thats big enough to fill a theatre like the Palladium. I plan to see it but will wait to get a discount nearer the time.
