Dear guys, I was hoping someone would have started a thread on events of the last night of S.T. Was it special? Any reprises or additional curtain calls? Truly an outstanding production. In my humble opinion!!
Oh, I misread your post. I thought the gist of it was "What was last night's final performance of Sweeney Todd like", which confused me as I thought it had closed a week ago. When I see you were just asking in general, what the last performance was like. Ignore me :P.
I wasn't there myself but have heard from a few people that were. The last matinee had a few changes and extra things that only people that have seen the show before would notice. (just like all last matinees have)
The evening show was a regular show (except for Imelda planting a few more kisses on Michael during "by the sea" than normally) No speeches or extra songs at curtain call - Michael gave Imelda some flowers and she gave him a pack of disposable razors though. (which I'm guessing he used after the show as the beard was gone when he left the theatre) They did have to do four curtain calls because the audience wouldn't stop applauding.
I don't know how it went financially but yes there were rumours of a Broadway transfer. Sondheim wanted it to transfer with Michael and Imelda reprising their roles and Michael said he would do it if it was with the same cast. It turned out to be too expensive sadly - they would need about $10 million.
