On Saturday i am buying my tickets for the Michael Grandage production fo this play with Daniel Radcliffe in, and i am going to admit the only reason i am going to get tickets is for Daniel Radcliffe.
I enjoy seeing plays though and im sure from what ive briefly read about it that it seems like a solid piece.
Have any of you seen a production before and what dd you think of the it?
I saw the Druid production a couple of years ago. For some reason, I find McDonagh much funnier on the page. Perfomance-wise, I think it's tough to pull off people being almost cartoonishly awful to one another and not have that negatively affect the audiences investment in the characters. It can all get a bit Punch 'n' Judy.
I saw the same Druid production when it was touring in the US and loved it. I thought it was very funny in McDonagh's own strange way. The Cripple, Billy, is a great part and Daniel Radcliffe is just perfect for it.
I've seen both Nick Hytner's original NT production and the Druid one. I really liked both. The NT production was utterly hilarious. I will never forget Dearbhla Molloy and Anita Reeves as the pretend aunties bickering in the village shop. It was quite a stylized production and despite a 100% Irish cast didn't overly concern itself with being too literal or realistic. Another highlight was when the entire cast sat before the footlights to watch Man of Aran in the village hall. The Druid production was much more realistic and was darker and more uncomfortable. I'm not sure another revival is needed so soon and I'm not quite sure its right for Daniel Radcliffe - time will tell.
