I would like to pay my respects to a man who can genuinely be classed a legend with a huge body of incredible work, topped by the landmark- the greatest musical about showbiz, I feel: A Chorus Line.
In the US, at least, he was probably the only Broadway composer known and recognized by the non-theatre going public because he was such a public figure, especially on television.
His work will stand the test of time. Not just A Chorus Line but also They're Playing Our Song, Sweet Smell of Success and The Goodbye Girl - all wonderful scores. He was a song writer extraordinaire and I don't think he ever got enough credit for that. He was one of the greats.
