"There is no better place than church to talk about political issues because they are ultimately moral issues, First Lady Michelle Obama told a church gathering on Thursday."
I don't think the IRS has ever pulled tax exempt status from a church because of their political activism- not even in the cases of those churches that became nothing more than right wing PACS like Falwell's Thomas Road Church.
I may be wrong- if it's happened I'd be very curious to hear about it.
And i bet they will. That is the difference between left and right: We on the left tend to want our leaders to be perfect. That's why you'll see "real" liberals criticizing Obama for not delivering single payer or getting all troops out of Iraq sooner.
Your side seems to be more forgiving- after all you are all blindly lining up behind the man who bragged he's more liberal than Teddy Kennedy- pro-choice, pro-gay marriage Mitt Romney.
Worth noting that FLOTUS's comments don't seem to call for the dismantling of all separations between church and state, but merely for more discussion on political issues of the day.
Agreed. Her point--that so many of the issues discussed in the political sphere can be debated within the context of morality, and thus lend themselves to discussion within the church setting--is perfectly valid. But for the FLOTUS to discuss the issue using all those terms in one sentence is an invitation to walk up a very slippery slope that requires an understanding of nuance and subtlety that I just don't believe the American electorate possesses.
