82 year old Berry Gordy Jr, founder of the famous record label Motown is seeking to produce a Motown musical based on his life and the history of the record label. The musicals aiming to be produced in late 2013.
On the production front Gordy has obtained the services of Broadway producer Kevin McCollum 'High Fidelity' and Doug Morris, the current Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment.
Suzan-Lori Parks, 'The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess' and Katori Hall 'The Mountaintop' have both been approached to write the book.
Charles Randolph-Wright is set to direct the show.
Berry Gordy Jr, a then professional boxer, founded Motown Records in 1959 using a $800 loan from his father. The now multimillion dollar record company launched the careers of such celebrated artists as 'The Supremes,' 'Marvin Gaye,' 'The Temptations,' 'Gladys Knight & the Pips,' 'The Commodores' 'Stevie Wonder' and 'The Jackson 5.'
The record label quickly became famous for what has become known as 'The Motown Sound,' a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence.
Some of the many hits published on the Motown Label include: Baby Love (The Supremes); I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye); I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (The Temptations); Every Beat of My Heart (Gladys Knight & the Pips); Three Times a Lady (The Commodores); I Just Called to Say I Love You (Stevie Wonder) and ABC (Jackson Five).
