Gypsy - Curve Production hitting london or touring?

Does anyone have any inside info or thoughts on this because i have fallen in love with the Angela Lansbury recording and would love to see it live!

Was just wondering if theres a possibility of it being picked up for tour like 42nd street which was a curve production (correct me if im wrong) :)

Quite a few of you seem to be very reliable and have good contacts so work your magic!

It's very unlikely that the Curve production will go anywhere.

There are rumours of a production of Gypsy eventually playing at the National in the next few years, which is likely to star Imelda Staunton (if the rumours are to be believed). If that does happen, it is very unlikely to be the same production as the Curve one, which did not have rapturous reviews anyway.

I suppose this COULD change - particularly as Prince Of Broadway (which Caroline O'Connor, the Curve's Mama Rose, was due to star in) has been delayed for a year. But I do think it's unlikely, as it closed three months ago and we've heard nothing since.

The current 42nd Street tour is a different production from the Curve one (and probably not as good).

No the current 42nd Street tour is the old UK Productions one based on the Broadway revival. The Curves version was also the Chichester version. The Curves King and I is (or was) on tour though.

Ahh thankyou for clearing that up! As much as i admire Imelda not sure she could pull of Mamma Rose but she surprised me in Sweeney so im sure she could surprise me again!

I hope we see a new production soon :)

I've just read on another forum that Gypsy will be a Chichester production but directly in London with imelda and directed by Jonathan Kent.

They also mentioned Michael ball in Mack and Mabel

Not sure how much truth there is to Any of that

I think at this point I'm ready for a production where neither Rose nor Louise are fantastic singers, Louise is supposed to be a no-talent-ox after all, and Rose's strength of will and fiery demeanor should be what drives her 'Rose's Turn', not a series of perfectly belted notes.

With that in mind, bring on Imelda!

Rose is a difficult role to sing and listening to non-singers (I.e. Tyne Daly's cast recording) sing the role isn't very pleasant for me. Ideally the actress should be a strong singer and actress (LuPone's Rose's Turn certainly was not a series of 'perfectly belted notes') and Louise should be able to sing strongly enough that it is clear she can make a transition in confidence during "The Strip". It will be interesting hearing Staunton attempt to sing the role..

I didn't find Rosalind Russell's rendition of Rose (try saying that when you're sloshed) to be too difficult to stand, and what I've heard of Daly has been fantastic, I just feel like we've heard the score sung every which way but loose by so many fantastic vocalists, I wouldn't be interested in another similar production, I'd be more intrigued by a more gritty, realistic version, which Imelda would surely bring.

I'm sure most people are aware that Daly's Gypsy was due to tour here. I booked tickets before it cancelled. I heard her on the radio saying that the cast recording was made when she had a bad cold and her voice was, in her view, shot. She didn't recommend it!

Daly production nearly came into the Prince of Wales , but never did. The LuPone production all nearly did a 12 week season at the Shaftesbury in 2010 but fell through.

The Leicester production was looked at but finances couldn't enable a run given everyone's concerns with the Olympics over the Summer.

The Imelda Staunton production of Gypsy is being looked at the NT in 2013 or 2014 last I heard.

Chichester have been trying to get rights for Gypsy for ages when they had Elaine Paige on board to play the role, it almost happened twice in 2005 and 2006 but the rights couldn't be obtained as Chichester wanted West End with the rights to stage. Could be different now...

I'd just like to see any new production of Gypsy, be it from the Curve, Chichester, the NT or wherever. A revival is LONG overdue in London!

Been reported on whatsonstage forum again that Chichester want to bring it straight into town, Imelda and Jonathan Kent are on board but they are having issues with te rights. Is there a market for gypsy, not a classic to the wider theatre audience and if Sweeney can't sell on Imelda and Balls name could this?

Hope so as I'd like to finally see a production of Gypsy. I wonder if this is the American classic Ball has hinted at he wants to revive.

I know it's not an epic leading man role, but I think he'd be a great Herbie, especially against Staunton's Madame Rose.

I don't know the show well enough so will trust your opinion on that. They do seem to have great chemistry and work well together. He has worked with Chichester before (Sweeney and the Love Story transfer) so its possible. In a large playhouse or smaller musical house (Savoy or Gielgud maybe) it could do well for a limited run.

If you've seen Gypsy (and if you haven't you've a treat to come), you'll realise Ball's not going to play Herbie at this stage in his career. Maybe in 15/20 years time.

Yes, that was my exact point - he's not going to, but I think it would suit him.

I agree... I highly doubt he will be in this show.

As for the American musical he has been hinting at: I've heard three different rumours: "Jekyll and Hyde", "Mack and Mabel" and "City of Angels"

Tyne Daly was simply amazing in the role, probably the best I've ever seen all the way from Noel Gordon to Patti LuPone.
Yes, the cast recording is not her at her best but I'll listen to it long before the LuPone or Peters versions.

Sadly, the production never made it to the West End. It was considered a casualty of the Gulf War as Daly refused to travel to the UK during the conflict and its season at the Prince Edward was cancelled almost as soon as it was booked. That was a bad year, 1991, for the Prince Edward as it lost both 'Children Of Eden' and 'Gypsy' as result of the non existent tourist trade during the conflict.

Never mind the West End! It was booked into Norwich as part of a UK tour.

Yep, that's when Norwich Theatre Royal was the UK's number one touring venue!

"As for the American musical he has been hinting at: I've heard three different rumours: "Jekyll and Hyde", "Mack and Mabel" and "City of Angels"

Jekyll and Hyde is obviously undergoing something of a rebirth right now. We've just had a successful production at the Union Theatre which had the critics exclaiming how much better the show is than they thought it was. In the US there's a new national tour starring Constantine Maroulis which has plans for Broadway. I would not be at all surprised to see the newly serious Michael Ball take this on.

Mack and Mabel is being done right now at the Southwark Playhouse to much acclaim. And City of Angels, great as it is, has two leading men - who would be the other?
