Anyways I saw the tour in Wimbledon on Friday evening. Was rather full, however there were a lot of £10 offers for the best available seats.
Cynthia Erivo was the definite highlight. What a delight to watch her performance. Her voice is fabulous and her delivery excellent.
The rest of the cast took a while to grab my attention. My partner and I both thought act one was quite dull and never really picked up until Raise Your Voice. I love Julie Atherton but she definitely seemed miscast here.
Some of the changes worked, others now. Cutting How I Got the Calling for Good to be a Nun baffles me. The new song is just not as good or as funny. Gotta say I didn't particularly miss Sacred Mass. Haven't got a Prayer would have probably worked with a stronger mother superior.
Act two got distinctly better. I LOVED Lady in the Long Black Dress, and Spread the Love around.
Cynthia is amazing. I wish I could get a recording of her singing the songs - especially Spread the Love Around where she sounds immense. I really like Denise Black as Mother Superior - although I don't agree with how she delivers some lines there's just something about her. Julie Atherton is the best Mary Bob I've ever seen (I've seen 4 now).
You're right about How I Got The Calling. It leaves the characters lacking. I feel Mary Patrick is particularly short hanged in this respect. I think that the way It's Good to be a Nun is sung is better to fit into the story (I.e. they can't sing) but they should've just applied it to HIGTC. I miss Do the Sacred Mass but it speeds the plot up a bit and sticks more truly to the movie.
I think the cast are particularly strong in this tour. There are a couple of things I'd iron out if I was in charge. I've also noticed some of the Broadway dialogue has been changed and some West End stuff returned, which is good because I think some of the changes on Broadway were kneejerk and unnecessary!!
A great touring show and I think it was perhaps a strange decision to have it in Wimbledon, having been so recently in London.
