"Catch Me If You Can" London?
Posted: 6/19/12 at 01:05pm
The "Charlie" thread got me thinking about Shaiman and Wittman's "Catch Me If You Can", and I was wondering if there was any chance of "Catch Me" coming to London? As I've said before, I think it's a GREAT show and feel it could really work over here. There is also evidence of shows that didn't necessarily do all that well in New York (such as "Shrek" and "Legally Blonde") coming over here and doing much better. What do other people think?

Worst show I've seen in New York. I found it a complete snooze fest.

Have to say I agree with Mark_E. I saw the show in New York and it bored me witless. I do know some poeple who seemed to love it though - but I found it torture to sit through. (But I feel exactly the same about the TV series Smash and some people seem to love that too LOL).

I would hope that with so much time away from the stage, the creatives would have fixed the problems before attempting to bring it here.

For me the framing device of the variety type show didnt work and because of that, you couldnt connect with the characters. Also, i think the framing device formed decided how the music should sound. Yes they used a sound from that era, but it was too 'variety' of that era.... well, i know what i mean lol

Zero chance of it coming to London!

^ Agree. Why did they feel the need to frame it like it was on tv? Just do a straight show like everything else!

I actually really liked the framing device and thought it worked wonderfully. At least it was trying to do something different from the film and not just be a carbon-copy of it on stage as that would have just been boring. I also thought it was a reflection on the real Frank Abagnale Jr. as he was essentially a showman putting on different characters in different situations, so the almost "show within a show" concept for me had some gravitas. It also gave the characters reason to sing.

I also disagree that it made us not emotionally connect with the characters. I felt the exact opposite! Throughout the show I cared for these characters and Hanratty's revelation to Frank at the end of the show that his father is dead, I found ultimately to be incredibly moving, finding myself actually with tears in my eyes. I also found their almost father-son relationship to be extremely believable.

I enjoyed the show, but didn't love it, just didn't think the material was suitable to be turned into a musical.

There's one good song in the show and it comes from a secondary character way too late in the second act to be worth anyone's time. Just buy the song on itunes and enjoy.

Totally disagree with that. I love the score - it's a huge step forward from Shaiman and Wittman's previous work and it's full of great songs for all of the characters. "Fly, Fly Away" is, for me, the least of them. One of my two or three most played OCRs.
