Just read on facebook that Jerry Herman's Mack & Mabel will begin an 8 week run at the Southwark Playhouse on July 5th! It will be produced & directed by "Parade" creative team Danielle Tarento and Thom Southerland and will star Norman Bowman as Mack and the fantastic Laura Pitt-Pulford as Mabel.
Sorry, Scripps - didn't mean to be dismissive of Norman Bowman. But, to be honest, I don't really know him or his work. Laura, however, was simply awesome as Lucille in Parade.
Norman Bowman was definitely not in the cast of the Southwark Playhouse Parade, when Laura Pitt-Pulford played Lucille Frank. I just did some checking and found he was in the ensemble of the Donmar Parade a few years ago (when Lara Pulver played Lucille - and Lara was also fantastic in the role). But he can't have made much of an impression on me as I don't remember him lol.
Apart from some murky lighting, this is sensational. Norman Bowman & Laura Pitt-Pulford are incredible as the leads, as are Jessica Martin, Stuart Matthew Price & Steve Serlin and the ensemble. With this, The Fix & Torch Song Trilogy, genius is rife on the fringe in SE1. Until the proper reviews come out, I've put some thoughts on my blog. Mack and Mabel
I've never agreed with any review I've ever read by Michael Covenay lol (he described Sondheim's Passion score as "flat and uninspired"!) - so I'll discount his gloom and still look forward with huge excitement to seeing this on August 13!
Another 4 star review, but there is a HUGE SPOILER so if you don't know or want to know what happens at the end, don't read it. Mack & Mabel One Stop Arts review
Yes I kepy shuffling in my seat but it was worth it. A really splendid production - delightfully staged, an excellent score and some very good performances notably from Laura Pitt-Pulford, Jessica Martin and Stuart Matthew Price.
If you're in town, do yourself a favour and get down to the Southwark Playhouse. Ticket prices are cheap but the quality of the production is very high indeed.
I do hate Southwark Playhouse and with the recent weather the stink and damp was at an all time high. But it was well worth suffering the smell, a lovely production with a strong cast. Took a good while for me to get into it but totally fell for it by the end.
Jaqs, agreed the damp, dank smell coming from the arches is rather strong at the moment but without serious investment, I'm not sure what they can do about it.
They won't do anything as they are leaving by the end of the year and return in a couple of years time to a purpose built space as part of redevelopment at London Bridge. In the intervening years rumours are they will operate from a space at Elephant & Castle.
