I would like the following to win (very few of them will, and I don't always want these to win for quality purposes!)
BEST NEW PLAY - Jumpy BEST REVIVAL - Anna Christie BEST ENTERTAINMENT - Derren Brown BEST ACTRESS - Ruth Wilson BEST ACTOR - James Corden BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE - Oliver Chris BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL - Sarah Lancashire BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL - Bertie Carvel BEST SUPPORTING MUSICAL PERFORMANCE - Nigel Harman BEST NEW MUSICAL - London Road BEST REVIVAL - Singin' In The Rain BEST DIRECTOR - Rufus Norris BEST CHOREOGRAPHER - I'm going to be honest - Javier de Frutos. BEST LIGHTING - Bruno Poet BEST SET - Rob Howell for Matilda BEST COSTUMES - Tim Hatley for Shrek BEST SOUND - Underworld/Ed Clarke AFFILIATE - no comment OPERA PRODUCTION - no comment OPERA ACHIEVEMENT - I only saw Anna Nicole but I'll go with ENO because they staged Death of Klinghoffer DANCE PRODUCTION - Metamorphosis DANCE ACHIEVEMENT - Ed Watson in Metamorphosis AUDIENCE AWARD - who cares? I'll say Les Mis.
Best New Play My choice: Jumpy My guess: One Man, Two Guvnors (ugh)
Best Revival My choice: Anna Christie My guess: Flare Path
Best Actress My choice and guess: Ruth Wilson, Anna Christie
Best Actor My choice: not on the list, would consider Cumberbatch but not JLM My guess: Cumberbatch and JLM, Frankenstein
Best Supporting Performance My choice and guess: Sheridan Smith, Flare Path
Best Actress in a Musical My choice: couldn't possibly, I love them all My guess: ...probably the Matildas
Best Actor in a Musical My choice: Bertie Carvel, Matilda My guess: suffice to say that someone at the Oliviers will lose their head if I don't get my way
Best Supporting Performance in a Musical My choice: Paul Kaye, Matilda My guess: no idea, really, but I hope it's Paul
Best New Musical My choice: tied between the incomparable Matilda and London Road My guess: one of those two, and I think London Road might take it
Best Musical Revival My choice: Crazy for You, though hardly an inspiring selection to choose from My guess: this could be the weird one of the night, so I'll say The Wizard of Oz!
Best Director My choice and guess: Matthew Warchus, Matilda (would be slightly surprised but not at all disappointed to see Rufus Norris take it for London Road)
Best Theatre Director My choice: Javier de Frutos, London Road My guess: since the Oliviers seem to love trolling musical fans by giving this to the least dance-y show on the list, I think they might agree with me on this one
Best Lighting My choice: Howard Harrison, Anna Christie My guess: is that they'll give it to the flashiest (literally!) option, so probably Frankenstein
Best Set Design My choice: Rob Howell, Matilda My guess: Michael Taylor, The Ladykillers (I thought it was a dreadful type of design for the play, but an impressive bit of work nonetheless, and everyone else seemed to love it)
Best Costume Design My choice and guess: Rob Howell, Matilda
Best Sound Design My choice and guess: Underworld and Ed Clarke, Frankenstein
Affiliate Theatre My choice and guess: Mogadishu
Audience Award My choice: didn't vote My guess: don't care
I'll admit though that I've consistently underestimated the popularity and alleged brilliance of One Man, Two Guvnors so for all I know that could sweep the awards the tonight.
I've not seen enough this year to comment on all of them
Best actress in a musical My choice - Sarah Lancashire Will win - the matildas
Best Revival My choice - Singin in the Rain Will win - Singin in the Rain
Best Supporting Actor in a musical My choice - Nigel Harman Will win - no idea, could go either way
Best New Musical I don't think it's fair to judge based on CDs alone, but I would t say it's been a great year for new musicals. I think it will be between London Road and Matilda
I thought Paulo Szot was a bored-looking plank of wood when I saw South Pacific (although he sang it gloriously). Reece Shearsmith and Nigel Lindsey aren't the strongest of singers although both gave very good acting performances (and I may be doing Lindsey a disservice listening to Youtube clips - I only saw a preview of Shrek where the sound balance was dreadful, although it doesn't sound like Richard Blackwood improved much!).
Bertie gave a skilled singing, acting and even dancing performance. Yes, Trunchbull is a panto villain in the show, and part of the attention is because he's doing drag in a mainstream way, but I do think he deserves to win today.
I seem to be the only one who thinks that Bertie Carvel was dreadful!
I think you actually are. Certainly the first I've ever heard say so, even from people that didn't like the show generally.
I thought it was a stunning performance: far more depth to the character than I remember from either the book or the film, and yet still the insanely evil comedy baddie. His speaking voice is incredible, the clipped feminine RP contrasting brilliantly with his appearance. And physically marvellous: eerily still and calm for most of the time, and then suddenly lunging out with a surprisingly athletic movement, whether throwing the girl by her pigtails or somersaulting over the gym horse. He brought the Dahl/Blake character to life exactly how I imagined it from the book and the illustrations, while at the same time - like all the very best actors - completely confounding my expectations every step of the way.
I really hope Paulo Szot wins! He was perfect as Emile de Becque. Elegant, charming and he made me cry both times I've seen it. He really deserves it and he was the best "actor in a musical" in my opinion.
As long as flare path and Anna Christie pick up something each I'll be happy. Would love Sarah Lancashire to get best actress too, as she gave a proper old fashioned star turn, not seen Matilda though.
Well among others, the fabulous Sheridan Smith has deservedly won, so too has the wonderful Ruth Wilson, the Frankenstein boys, a few awards already for Matilda too including best director for Matthew Warchus. More to come soon.....
I think the Oliviers broadcast is good but it's nothing like the Tonys which is always entertaining and has plenty of gags and live performances. They need to revamp the Oliviers so that that coverage can be on BBC Two or even BBC One.
The bbc do the baftas excellently, do they have the interns doing the oliviers?! Until they get this on at least bbc4 it can't be taken seriously. It's still too stuffy for the public overall. It needs to be more like the Tony's or wos awards. Maybe they should har a best touring show award to help include the rest of the country and get them to perform to. Make it more about a celebration of uk theatre and not just a luvvy fest.
Better than last year, but as I couldn't hear much of it they undid the good they started in act 1
I agree Princeton with the stuffy remark, The WoS at least has a sense of fun as does the Tonys and the Tonys is very entertaining even if you're not a regular theatregoer.
If it were me, I'd focus on the musical performances and have someone like Graham Norton host it.
