"As for the American musical he has been hinting at: I've heard three different rumours: "Jekyll and Hyde", "Mack and Mabel" and "City of Angels"
Jekyll and Hyde is obviously undergoing something of a rebirth right now. We've just had a successful production at the Union Theatre which had the critics exclaiming how much better the show is than they thought it was. In the US there's a new national tour starring Constantine Maroulis which has plans for Broadway. I would not be at all surprised to see the newly serious Michael Ball take this on.
Mack and Mabel is being done right now at the Southwark Playhouse to much acclaim. And City of Angels, great as it is, has two leading men - who would be the other?
I know City of Angels is a show Michael has talked about doing before and it was once a project he was considering doing with his friend Antonio Banderas - but I'm not so sure that will still be the case if this is the show he's doing. He also briefly talked about it with John Barrowman on that chat show he had a few years ago.
Dick Condon was an absolute show business wonder, ruthless to the point where he was sometimes called the 'David Merrick of Norwich' but he did a totally one off job with the Theatre Royal in the 70's and 80's and he was envied by many a regional producer.
I agree. But there doesn't seem to be that many new shows that are actually good these days. The newests shows include Viva Forever, The Bodyguard, the Susan Boyle one and the one about Corrie - I wouldn't want to see him involved in these or any like them...
Book of Mormon is of course coming to London - but there is no part suitable for him in that.
The last new show I actually liked was "Love Story" and he was a producer on that.
With all due respect, I think the case is that there are few musicals produced in the West End that are very good, not that no good musicals are being written...
