Well, of course this is a revival of show about which we know a great deal. The other two pieces have never appeared on stage so we naturally know less about them.
The biggest problem in both versions is the love affair between Boy George and the wannabe character. The story needs Jon Moss as a character. The real story is far more dramatic and interesting than composite relationship depicted in the musical. And considering their relationship has already been dramatised in Worried About the Boy, having Moss as a character is a more likely prospect than it was in the early 2000s.
Of course the big difference between Taboo, Viva and Bodyguard is that Taboo isn't a jukebox musical (ok, it has two Culture Club numbers plus George's Bow Down Mister but the rest of the score are original songs).
Sorry but i am sticking by the fact the Broadway score was far far better. Pie in th Sky was nice but Come on In is far far better.
I don't think the Broadway show was dumbed down, that was not the problem, the problem was that the original London book was so messy that when Charles Busch took over for Broadway he had to try and jigsaw a story together that made sense. In many ways he did that, however the biggest problem is that it can't make up it's mind as to what story it wants to tell. Act 1 focused on Boy George, Act 2 on Leigh.
On Broadway having Philip and Big Sue narrate the story was brilliant (and provided some awesome comedy moments), the Broadway one had an actual ending unlike London, the love story between George and his lover whilst not perfect worked better on Broadway. Leigh and Nicola got a story (that was sorely lacking from the original, Nicola was a big part of his life) and the piece moved with ease.
Don't get me wrong i love the UK production, i watched it about 4 times The Venue and 3 times on Tour and was also lucky to sit in on the early workshop for the show.
Both have their issues, but for then new one i would dump Billy and Kim and put Marcus in from Broadway, i would ditch Petal and remove the 'India' ending. I think they need to mix the 2.
Loved the show in Brixton tonight. Cast were fabulous and the tacky but wonderful costumes totally hit the mark, holding it in a club just gave it a great atmosphere.
