The UK Mirror is reporting that the story of British pop group The Spice Girls is headed to the musical stage.
According to sources to the paper, the musical is being billed as a two-hour "pop extravaganza" tracking the rise of the band. Geri Halliwell known to fans as Ginger Spice will be producing it while the other four girls will back the developing project. Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham will also help select the actresses playing them. "The project is Geri's baby really but all the girls are backing it," the Mirror quoted a source as saying.
"The idea is for five relatively unknown actresses to take the parts and hopefully the girls will each have a say in who is cast," the story added.
Melanie Brown aka Mel B starred on Broadway in RENT and recently completed a run in PEEP SHOW in Las Vegas. Melanie Chisholm, the group's Mel C, is set to maker her West End debut in BLOOD BROTHERS later this month.
Their first album, Spice, sold more than 23 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by a female group in music history. They have sold 65 million records worldwide with only four albums and twelve singles, making them the most successful British band since The Beatles and the best selling girl group of all time. Measures of their success include international record sales, a 2007/2008 reunion tour, merchandising, record breaking achievements, iconic symbolism such as the Union Flag dress, "Girl Power", a box office hit movie Spice World and their nicknames.
