The Lyric Hammersmith's major autumn revival of Eugene O'Neill's rarely seen classic Desire Under the Elms, will feature a cast which includes rising star Morgan Watkins (Saved, Lyric Hammersmith; The Hour, BBC) as Eben Cabot, Tony Award nominee Finbar Lynch (Hollow Crown: Richard II, BBC; The Duchess of Malfi, Old Vic) as his father Ephraim and celebrated Irish actress Denise Gough (Messiah, BBC; Six Characters in Search of an Author, Chichester/West End) taking the role of Ephraim's troublesome new wife Abbie Putnam.
60 years after the original Broadway production, Nobel Prize winner Eugene O'Neill's intoxicating tale of lust and redemption will be directed by Lyric Hammersmith Artistic Director Sean Holmes and brought to life by a stellar creative team including designer Ian MacNeil (An Inspector Calls, West End/Broadway/UK tour), sound designer Christopher Shutt (War Horse, National Theatre/West End/Broadway) and movement director Mikel Murfi, who also takes the role of Eben's brother Simeon.
Having seen his two half-brothers off in search of California gold, Eben Cabot can finally claim rightful ownership of his mother's farm. But when his elderly father returns to take charge with a pretty new wife in tow, Eben struggles to repress the battles between lust, pride and conscience that rage within. Inspired by the Ancient Greek myth of Phaedra, O'Neill's tragedy portrays its characters' brutal disputes and fierce feelings of entitlement with all the powerful imagery, unsettling strangeness and poetic theatricality characteristic of his greatest writing.
