National Theatre Live to Broadcast Alan Bennett's PEOPLE, Starring Frances de la Tour, Beg. March 21

National-Theatre-Live-20010101

On Thursday, March 21, National Theatre Live will broadcast a live performance of PEOPLE, the acclaimed new comedy by Alan Bennett featuring Frances de la Tour and directed by Nicholas Hytner. The broadcast will be shown at cinemas throughout North America with many encore dates available.

A sale? Why not? Release all your wonderful treasures onto the open market and they are there for everyone to enjoy. It's a kind of emancipation, a setting them free to range the world... a saleroom here, an exhibition there: art, Lady Stacpoole, is a rover. People spoil things; there are so many of them and the last thing one wants is them traipsing through one's house. But with the park a jungle and a bath on the billiard table, what is one to do? Dorothy (Frances de la Tour) wonders if an attic sale could be a solution.

Award-winning writer Alan Bennett is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner and Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour, with whom he worked on The History Boys and The Habit of Art. The cast also features Selina Cadell and Linda Bassett.

Alan Bennett is one of Britain's most celebrated playwrights, and the much anticipated People is the sixth of his plays to have its premiere at The National Theatre. Following its original run at The National Theatre, The History Boys transferred to Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2006, and toured internationally before being turned into a film, again directed by Nicholas Hytner and with a cast including Frances de la Tour.

Bennett and Hytner also collaborated on the award-winning play and film The Madness of King George and their last stage production, The Habit of Art, was broadcast as part of National Theatre Live in 2010.

National Theatre Live is an initiative by the UK's National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world. Since its first season, which began in June 2009 with the acclaimed production of Phédre starring Helen Mirren, over one million people have now experienced the National's work on movie screens worldwide. This past record-breaking season, which included the program's most-seen title to date One Man, Two Guvnors, has contributed significantly to the National's recently reported growth in global audiences.

In the New York City area, screenings continue at NYU's Skirball Center, Symphony Space, Cinemas 1 2 3, Kew Gardens Cinema, The John Drew Theater (East Hampton), and more. National Theatre Live can be seen at cinemas screens throughout North America.
