The Mokhwa Repertory Company will present their extraordinary version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet at the Rose Theatre from 16-25 July.

The production returns to the UK after its sell-out performances at the Barbican in 2006, playing at the Rose as the only British date on an international tour.

Oh Tae-Suk's interpretation paints the star struck lovers' story with striking images, glorious martial art sequences, live music and impressive dance, ritual and gesture. Korean in both temperament and setting, Romeo and Juliet will be performed in Korean with English subtitles.

Jerry Gunn, General Manager at the Rose Theatre explained "The Rose has the perfect stage to present Shakespeare and we find it very interesting to see different interpretations of his plays. Master Oh's production brings a refreshing and unique interpretation, full of the traditional comedy and tragedy in the piece, but also dance and movement in a style particular to the Korean and Asian cultures. The use of space is extraordinary with the most beautiful costumes and scenery. There are amazing and strikingly clever and simple effects, plus moments of spellbinding and breathtaking tableaus."

Brought to the Rose by Theatre For All, the company behind the incredibly popular Nanta which played at the Rose last year, Romeo and Juliet promises to a highlight of the New Malden Arts Festival which takes place throughout July.
