ITV & Andrew Lloyd Webber's Search For A SUPERSTAR: Recap, Episode 9

Friday night saw a double elimination on Superstar, which began with a group performance of Pinball Wizard (because it's from a rock opera, which Jesus Christ Superstar is sometimes depending on who's trying to define it). Once more, it was a bit of a hash, with a key change that seemed to confuse the contestants, and a very abrupt ending.

Jason Donovan made a late stab for being the most sensible judge, mocking Mel C's fretting about the eliminations by pointing out quite rightly, "We're not saving lives here," and emphasising that it's just an entertainment show. Andrew Lloyd Webber then jabbered about the need for the viewers to vote for the right contestants lest they ruin people's careers. No pressure, then.

In terms of performances, Jeff got a wind machine as he bumped and ground his way through A Whole Lotta Love, and Roger seemed to get a raw deal with the song choices, lumbered with the ever-so-soulful Feelin' Good. Still, all the boys sounded better than the evening's guest star, Paloma Faith.

As the nervous contestants waited to find out who was through, Amanda decided to make everyone much more uncomfortable by asking the judges to name who they wanted to win - Mel picked Ben; Jason picked "all of them" (coward); Dawn picked whoever pleased her best on the casting couch. No, really, that's what she said.

So the three to sing off were Roger, Jon and Jeff, who performed 'Could We Start Again Please?'. Roger's voice sounded completely worn out, but none the less Andrew Lloyd Webber made the decision to save him, the most experienced performer of the trio, while praising Jon's singing skills and telling Jeff That he will certainly play Jesus one day.

And now we have the weekend off - the next live Superstar show is on Monday evening. Who are you backing?

She has many eclectic loves, including sport, karaoke, reality television, MMORPGs, three-volume Victorian novels, the British seaside, embroidery and Veronica Mars.
