Henry Goodman to Star in THE WINSLOW BOY at the Old Vic, March 8-May 25

Henry Goodman will play the role of Arthur Winslow in Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy, which will open at The Old Vic on 19 March 2013 with previews from 8 March. Directed by Lindsay Posner, Rattigan's compelling play is based on the true story of a father's fight to clear his son's name when he is expelled from Naval College after being convicted of theft.

First staged in 1946, The Winslow Boy portrays the battle between personal principles and conscience and an impenetrable establishment under the media.

Henry Goodman most recently played the role of Arturo Ui in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Chichester Festival Theatre). His other theatre credits include Yes, Prime Minister (Chichester Festival Theatre and West End), Copenhagen (Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield), Duet for One (Almeida and West End), Fiddler on the Roof (Sheffield Crucible and West End), The Gondoliers (English National Opera), Feelgood (Hampstead Theatre and West End), The Hypochondriac (Almeida Theatre), Chicago (Adlephi Theatre), Art, Hysteria (Royal Court, West End and on tour) and Assassins (Donmar Warehouse). His numerous credits for the RSC include the title role in Richard III, They Shoot Horses Don't They, The Comedy of Errors, Volpone and Henry VIII. His credits for the National Theatre include Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Metropolis Kabaret, Summerfolk, Guys and Dolls, Angels in America, Pericles and After the Fall.

Goodman's television credits include Yes, Prime Minister, Nixon's The One, The Turing Project, Florizel Street, Lehman Brothers - Something for Nothing, Murder in Surburbia and The Mayor of Casterbridge and he soon will be seen in the forthcoming dramas Falcón (Sky Atlantic HD) and Final Flight (BBC2). Films include Wonder, Taking Woodstock, The Damned United, Keen Eddie, Colour Me Kubrick, Green Street, Out on a Limb, Churchill - The Hollywood Years, Notting Hill and Mary Reilly.

He has won or been nominated for Olivier, Evening Standard, TMA and Critics' Circle Awards for his roles in Duet for One, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, Hysteria, Assassins, Groucho at Large, Peter Pan, Metamorphosis, Every Man in His Humour, The Devils, The Comedy of Errors, Volpone, The Time of Your Life, The Merchant of Venice and Angels in America.

Lindsay Posner was Associate Director at the Royal Court Theatre from 1987 to 1992 where his production of Death and The Maiden won two Olivier Awards. His other theatre credits include Butley starring Dominic West (Duchess Theatre), An Ideal Husband starring Samantha Bond and Rachel Stirling (Vaudeville Theatre), Fool For Love starring Juliette Lewis (Apollo Theatre), Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge starring Ken Stott (Duke of York's Theatre, nominated for four Olivier Awards), Carousel (Savoy Theatre), Fiddler on The Roof (Sheffield and Savoy Theatres), House of Games, Tom and Viv, The Hypochondriac, Romance (Almeida), A Life in the Theatre (Apollo Theatre), the world premiere of Power by Nick Dear and Tartuffe (National), Twelfth Night, Volpone, The Taming of the Shrew and The Rivals (RSC), Abigail's Party (Menier Chocolate Factory) and most recently The Turn of the Screw (Almeida) and Uncle Vanya (Vaudeville Theatre). His production of Noises Off at The Old Vic and then the Novello Theatre, will tour theatres across the UK and Ireland from 27 March 2013.

Terence Rattigan is one of England's greatest playwrights. His many plays include French Without Tears, After the Dance, Flare Path, Love In Idleness, While The Sun Shines, The Browning Version, Harlequinade, Adventure Story, Who Is Sylvia?, The Deep Blue Sea, The Sleeping Prince, Separate Tables, Variation On A Theme, Ross, Man And Boy, A Bequest To The Nation, In Praise Of Love and Cause Célèbre. Rattigan also wrote numerous screenplays including French Without Tears, The Way To The Stars, Journey Together, While the Sun Shines, The Winslow Boy, The Browning Version, The Prince And The Showgirl, Separate Tables, The Sound Barrier, The Man Who Loved Redheads, The Deep Blue Sea, The Final Test, The VIPs, The Yellow Rolls Royce, Goodbye Mr Chips, Conduct Unbecoming, A Bequest to the Nation, The Day Will Dawn, English Without Tears, Uncensored, Brighton Rock and Bond Street.

The Winslow Boy by Terence Rattigan will play Fri 8 March - Sat 25 May 2013. Previews: 8-18 March; Press Performance: 19 March at 7pm Mon-Sat 7.30pm; Wed & Sat 2.30pm. Please note there are no matinee performances on Sat 9 Mar, Wed 13 Mar or Wed 20 Mar. There is a matinee performance on Thu 21 Mar at 2.30pm. Audio Described and Captioned Performances: TBC.
