English National Ballet celebrates Christmas at the Coliseum with its sumptuous production of The Nutcracker, choreographed by Wayne Eagling, and Derek Deane's dazzling homage to George Gershwin, Strictly Gershwin.

The Nutcracker

8 - 30 December 2011

English National Ballet's magical production of The Nutcracker returns to the London Coliseum in December, following its World Premiere in 2010, when it was enjoyed by almost 70,000 people

Choreographed by Wayne Eagling, this new Nutcracker is a traditional retelling of the story set in atmospheric Edwardian London. A world of tradition and elegance is designed by Peter Farmer bringing to life the eternally popular Tchaikovsky score that features the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and many other familiar favourites. Both the sets and costumes of The Nutcracker sparkle with Swarovski elements, Swarovski having generously supportEd English National Ballet since 2007.

This is English National Ballet's 10th production of The Nutcracker since it performed its first full length Nutcracker at the Stoll Theatre in its founding year 1950. English National Ballet has performed The Nutcracker every single Christmas since then. The making of the production was featured on BBC4's Agony & Ecstasy; a Year with English National Ballet shown in Spring and again in Summer 2011

Strictly Gershwin

4 - 15 January 2012

Coming to the London Coliseum for the first time in January 2012 is Strictly Gershwin. This promises to be a sparkling and spectacular finale to Christmas at the Coliseum. The full Company of 68 dancers and guests will tap, twirl, jeté and glide their way through a series of Gershwin classics performed by an on-stage jazz orchestra playing music designed to get the toes tapping.

Strictly Gershwin is a dazzling homage to George Gershwin, the big band era and the glamour of musical motion pictures. Gershwin's timeless classics are combined with Derek Deane's choreography and Roberta Guidi di Bagno's designs which shimmer with Swarovski elements, to conjure up the Hollywood genius and glamour of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Joining the Company will be tappers Paul Robinson and Douglas Mills.

Strictly Gershwin in-the-round premiered in 2008 at the Royal Albert Hall and continues English National Ballet's hugely popular and successful series of in-the-round ballet presentations. This year English National Ballet is creating a proscenium arch version of the show, which tours the UK in Autumn, before coming to London in January 2012

Alongside the performances, English National Ballet also offers a series of events that delve deeper into the magical world of The Nutcracker, and Strictly Gershwin. These include on-stage Ballet Workshops, Choreographic Masterclassses, and workshops designed for the whole family. There's also a special class for couples, themed around Strictly Gershwin, and its various dance styles.
