Digital Theatre's Next Release Will Be KING LEAR, Starring Jonathan Pryce

Digital Theatre today (12 February 2013) announces its next release - Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor Jonathan Pryce stars in Michael Attenborough's production of William Shakespeare's King Lear. The production, the second collaboration between Digital Theatre and The Almeida Theatre, was captured live in October 2012 during the play's sell-out run.

King Lear is available now from Digital Theatre and can be watched online, downloaded, viewed on Samsung Smart TV or streamed to Digital Theatre's new iPad app.

King Lear formed part of the World Shakespeare Festival, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company for London 2012. It marks Michael Attenborough's final production as Artistic Director after ten years with the Almeida.

Jonathan Pryce is joined in the cast by Kieran Bew (Edmund), Steven Elliott (Oswald), Ben Dilloway (King of France), Steven Elliott (Oswald), Phoebe Fox (Cordelia), Trevor Fox (Fool), Ian Gelder (Kent), Richard Goulding (Edgar), Richard Hope (Albany), Jenny Jules (Regan), Barry McCarthy (Lear's Loyal Servant), Andrew Nolan (Duke of Burgundy), Chook Sibtain (Cornwall), Christopher Tester (Gloucester's Servant), Zoe Waites (Goneril), Clive Wood (Gloucester) and Alix Wilton Regan (Gloucester's Loyal Servant). The production has designs by Tom Scutt with lighting by Jon Clark and sound and music by Dan Jones.

When Lear asks each of his daughters to profess their love for him, he is flattered by the false hyperbole of Regan and Goneril. When his youngest daughter Cordelia confesses to love him simply as a daughter should, his pride is dented and he casts her out of his kingdom. Too late to realise his mistake, and forced from power by his offspring, an increasingly impotent and frail Lear descends into madness.

Digital Theatre, launched in 2009 by Robert Delamere and Tom Shaw, works in partnership with Britain's leading theatre companies to capture live performance authentically onscreen. Using multiple camera angles and high-definition technology, they bring the drama and emotion of each production to a global online audience. Each production is available to rent online for a limited period or downloaded.www.digitaltheatre.com

Digital Theatre has previously collaborated with the Almeida to capture Jez Butterworth's Olivier Award-nominated comedy Parlour Song in May 2009. Directed by Ian Rickson, the production starred Amanda Drew, Toby Jones and Andrew Lincoln.

King Lear marks the first production to be released since Digital Theatre launched its iPad app in January 2013. The production joins Digital Theatre's full catalogue - including Parlour Song - which can be watch through the iPad app, viewed on your desktop as a download, watched online or enjoyed on Samsung Smart TV.
