For over 25 years, Dave Willetts has been one of the UK's leading theatre musical stars, praised by critics and contemporaries alike for his worldwide performances in musicals including The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Cats.

And now, he tells me, after rooting around in his loft and finding boxes of old recordings, some of his finest work is about to be released as an album, entitled Once In A Lifetime.

He still seems slightly amazed at the way technology has been able to digitise those old tapes and bring together an album of the highest quality.

"It's just incredible!" he marvels.

The album doesn't just include musical theatre tracks, but also songs with a more country feel and rock tinges. His old colleague and collaborator Don Black is quoted on the blurb as saying that nobody else could do an album like this, and a good alternative title would have been "Unmistakably Dave".

"That's nice, isn't it?" beams Willetts.

The track featured here is one of Black's, working with Simon May - We Love Who We Love, a duet with Carol Woods.

Willetts has a busy summer coming up - he's about to reprise his role in the national tour of 42nd Street, and he promises me that there might even be some solo cabarets coming up too. Watch this space!

Dave Willetts's album Once In A Lifetime is out on May 28th from Stage Door Records.
