Miriam Zendle talks to the acclaimed cast
You guys must be having the most amazing evening.
AnDrew Scott: Yeah, we're really, really delighted to have won.
Katherine Parkinson: It's nice just to see each other!
AnDrew Scott: We didn't know we would all be here at the same time. We're delighted.
So what have you all been up to since doing Cock?
Katherine: I had a lovely tea with Andrew... high tea at Fortnums.
AnDrew Scott: James has been in New York.
Paul Jesson: [of the Olivier] I've never held one of this design.
AnDrew Scott: He has had the other type.
Paul Jesson: The other design, yes. I met him once, Laurence Olivier. It was at a garden party. I went into this outhouse where all the desserts were being kept and he was there, trying to open a tin of biscuits. It was just the two of us. He turned to me and said 'would you like some icecream'?
[Everyone laughs]
Andrew: Did you want some?
Paul: Yes, thank you.
Andrew: And that was it?
Paul: Are you recording this???
I'm afraid so! I was going to ask you a question but you were anecdoting so I didn't want to interrupt.
Katherine: Did he give you the icecream?
What was going to get the Olivier like? Was the atmosphere electric?
Paul: You just have to be careful not to trip.
Andrew: Katherine is the only one wearing heels.
Katherine: Andrew helped me. It was very good, it was symbolic of the support in the production, really, that Andrew held my hand as we went up on stage. Paul was guiding me from the back, guiding my arse.
Paul: I just texted Ben in New York to let him know.
Were you surprised at your win - the categories are very strong this year?
Paul: They weren't going to miss the opportunity of saying 'and the winner is - Cock'!
Andrew: Exactly.
Mike Bartlett: Even if it hadn't been any good, they wouldn't have missed that opportunity!
What's the experience of working in such an intimate environment - the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs - like?
Andrew: It was all part of the production. The audience politics were really part of its success. So you have to take the good with the bad!
