Any Dream Will Do Recap # 5

Next week the semi-finals take place, so tonight had to be crunch time, in that viewers had to see the right Joseph go home. A last-minute, surprise exit, is not is needed to boost the show. With £50 per ticket at stake for theatre-goers, they need four stars to come back next week, standing tall and confident, displaying West End potential. So who went home and who kept hold of the coat, for another week?

Each Joseph had to portray a different emotion this week; dreamy, vulnerability, courageousness, arrogance and betrayal. Andrew Lloyd Webber had cleverly picked the opposite of what each performer had shown so far in the competition.

The opening montage showed the boys criticising each other; the betrayal part was nailed early on, then! Hot favourite, Lee was the first to step up to the plate. He sang Daydream Believer. I know this guy is extremely popular but I found his performance extremely false. He smiled his way through his way through, as if to say "Is this enough, Andrew?" He reminded me of Daniel in prior weeks, in that it was pure cheese. He never convinced me he was dreamy, as I was always aware he was acting. The Judges loved him, though. Zoe thought he was "great." John thought Lee had "perfect early Joseph quality."

Ben had to play the 'vulnerable' card after weeks of mastering 'arrogance'. He sang Roy Orbison's Cryin' and was very intense and believable. Randy Jackson from American Idol would have said he was "pitchy" but he evoked the necessary emotion to pull it off. He convinced me, that, if given the chance, he could play the part and impress a London audience. Bill Kenwright said "great performance." Andrew gave Ben a back handed compliment by saying he had a "long way to go in the competition."

The next emotion was 'betrayal.' I cannot think of a worse candidate for this than 'cutesy pie' Craig. I was proved right as the Scot's version of Suspicious Minds was more like a puppy begging for food, rather than someone double crossing you. It was very cabaret and fine for a cruise ship, but not the West End. Rather than someone stabbing you in the back, you felt like he was going to lick you across the face! The judges loved it, even Andrew forgave the smiling Scot for not conveying the right emotion. What was going on?

Shots of Lewis crying like a baby last week did not bode well. He had to convey courage today in the style of a gladiator. The song, Enrique Inglesias' Hero was the ideal number for this. Lewis looked better tonight; less Bob Downe and more like a Joseph in waiting. He used the voice within, rather than lazily deliver like he had previously. But did he display courage? Well, no, not really, he looked like he was clinging to a life raft. The Judges views were mixed. John said "Better than Enrique." He then turned on him! But Andrew summed up public opinion; "Fantastic, but no inner strength."

Keith had to display the arrogance of Joseph; cut to the other 'Joes' saying that he could cope with this trait in his sleep! I spy jealousy and Keith was well and truly stitched up with this footage. Cut to the talented Scotsman saying: "arrogance is hard to find!" Let Me Entertain You was the song and he certainly did just that. Graham then told him that a viewer said he looked like Tommy Steele! Stitch up number two! Methinks they want Keith out! Besides all of this, he did remarkably well with a different song, displaying a new side to himself.  He was royally set up this week and I hope that viewers see through this and vote, regardless.

Zoe said that: "Vocally you are Joseph." Andrew closed with; "potentially a great Joseph."

The final voting was now underway. Run V.T of each Joseph climbing, singing and defying gravity, in preparation for the role. Ben and Keith stood out here as key players.

Celebrated singer, Josh Groban chose Lee to duet with him. They both sang You Raise Me Up, and the producers had a field day juxtaposing a shot of Keith, looking capable of murder, fulfilling the 'betrayal' angle that Craig had wasted!

First one through is Lewis! Then (surprise, surprise!) Lee, Ben is in the sing off, Keith is through, finally leaving Craig to battle it out with young Ben. Their song is Barry Manilow's I Made It Through The Rain. Ben convinces that he has surivived something far more – he looks like he wants to win. Craig looks, just happy to be there. Andrew agrees and sends Craig home.

The nightclub performer exits singing, Close Every Door and this is proof that the right man went home, as he performs like someone has stolen his sweets, instead of his crown! He is devoid of emotion. At last, this is a sing-off where the results seem logical!

Next week is the semi final. Even though Lee is the favourite; any dream will do, so keep voting!
